March is Colon Cancer Awareness month. Here are 3 things to consider that may reduce your risk of colorectal cancer:
- Your body weight. Avoid excess weight gain, especially around the midsection. Being overweight or obese increases the risk of colorectal cancer in both men and women.
- Your physical activity. Are you getting enough physical activity? Work towards a goal of at least 30 minutes of moderate activity five days of the week, or 20 minutes of vigorous physical activity, on three days a week. Haven’t worked out in a while? Check with your provider first.
- Your diet. To help lower your colorectal cancer risk, choose meals that are high in vegetables, fruits, and whole grains and low in red and processed meats. Increasing fiber, especially from whole grains, may also lower your risk.
