July 13, 2014—If you’re a woman, you’ve probably had a pelvic exam as part of your annual checkup. But for some women, that exam may not be necessary, according to a new guideline from the American College of Physicians (ACP).

The guideline states that some women, including those who don’t have gynecologic symptoms and who aren’t pregnant, shouldn’t have routine pelvic exams. The reason: These exams rarely uncover serious diseases, they don’t seem to help women live longer and they come with downsides for many women.
