YouthWorks puts rakes to good use for Memorial Hospice

By Branden Johnson

I received word from one of our hospice nurses that a hospice patient needed some help raking leaves in their yard.  I immediately thought of the best raking crew I could think of—our YouthWorks team.  I informed the YouthWorks council that we needed some help over THEIR spring break to get this done.  How many high school students are willing to take time out of their spring break to help hospice patients?

In total, we had four YouthWorks members – Mark Day, Sy Ruiz, Yaly Aguilara, and Stephanie Sanchez.  These YouthWorks members helped one of our hospice patients by raking and bagging leaves for over an hour and half.  As we worked, I couldn’t help but step back and realize how special these students are and the dedication they have to serving those in our community – serving those who are at the end-of-life.

If you ever get a chance to meet these students, I encourage you to thank them for their efforts.  They are wonderful students who continually strive to go Above and Beyond.  These students exemplify the meaning of—“I’m in!”

YouthWorks will be helping out at Passion for the Village and will be auctioning off their time and effort to raise funds for Children’s Village.  For more information on Passion for the Village, please contact Mary Lynne Brewington at 574-3209 or email at
